Balancing Codes and Crops: Inspiring Journey of a Computer science tutor to thriving agricultural entrepreneur.

Inspired by passion and dedication, Mr. Okot Robert, a computer science tutor from Amuru District, Lamogi Sub-County, begun to explore ways to apply technological skills into farming alongside teaching. He committed himself to learn everything he could about sustainably farming practices and started clearing land, purchase Agro-inputs to start off Production.

The early days were tough with Robert facing challenges of pests and disease management, transplanting and applying chemicals at the wrong time coupled with unfavorable weather Conditions. However, when he showed up to buy Agro-inputs for the first time at Omia Agribusiness Outlet in Gulu City, his contacts were recorded for on-farm follow up by field extension officers who begun to support him with the technical support such as on-farm trainings on best agronomic practices and practical field activities demonstrations.

As the months passed, Robert’s farm began to flourish. While Omia Agribusiness marketing team linked him to profitable markets to offtake his produce, he similarly uses his social media platforms to do marketing where customers raved about the quality of his crops hence patronizing him for quality and quantity.

He reveals that he views Omia Agribusiness in another perspective saying “Through Omia, I was able to explore different seed crops and set up numerous nursery beds for onions because Onion is the game of numbers”.

To address unfavorable climatic conditions especially drought, Mr. Robert deployed irrigation systems into his farming structure to enable production throughout the season.

Through Omia Agribusiness Team’s support, guidance and encouragement, Mr. Robert was able to turn passion into reality and overcome challenges.

Today, Robert’s farm is a model of sustainable agriculture with good irrigation systems attracting visitors from the district and other institutions who come to learn.

As he looks out over his fields, Robert has enrolled his son to pursue a university degree in agriculture and he is courageous that in the coming years, he’ll have someone to directly manage the farm.
