How Technical Support Helped Bishop Arkanjelo Lemi Wani Build a Thriving Layer Enterprise.
After decades of dedicated service in the Church, Bishop Arkanjelo Lemi Wani chose to begin a new chapter of life in Uganda following his retirement from active ministry in South Sudan. Like many retired professionals, he envisioned agriculture as both a source of livelihood and a meaningful way to remain productive while contributing to his community.
His first venture was goat farming, where he built a flock of more than 200 goats. However, the enterprise proved difficult to sustain. Limited grazing land and the management demands of a large herd constrained its growth, prompting him to explore a different enterprise.
He transitioned into layer poultry farming, but, like many professionals’ entering agriculture after retirement, he quickly discovered that success in farming requires more than passion and investment. Practical technical knowledge, enterprise-specific management skills, and continuous guidance are often the missing ingredients. Many retirees face similar challenges as they adapt from careers in administration, education, public service, or ministry to the dynamic realities of commercial agriculture.
Recognizing the need for expert support, Bishop Wani reached out to Omia Agribusiness, where he was connected to Animal Health and Nutrition Officer, following an initial assessment of the flock, the officer identified key management practices that required improvement and provided practical recommendations tailored to the farm’s needs.
Since then, Omia Agribusiness has continued to provide regular technical support through routine farm visits, technical guidance on litter management and flock health, and timely feed delivery to ensure uninterrupted production. This consistent engagement has enabled the Bishop to adopt better poultry management practices, resulting in healthier birds, improved productivity, and increased egg production.
Today, Bishop Wani’s poultry enterprise stands as a testament to the value of professional extension services and the importance of continuous learning in agriculture. His journey demonstrates that while transitioning into farming can be challenging, access to the right technical support and trusted agribusiness partners can transform uncertainty into a successful and sustainable enterprise.
